Former President Donald Trump’s conviction on all 34 counts in his hush-money trial has led a majority of independents and “double haters”—those with unfavorable views of both Trump and President Joe Biden—to believe that Trump should end his bid for the White House, according to a recent ABC News/Ipsos poll.

This sentiment could significantly impact the upcoming November election, ABC News analyzes.

The poll revealed that 52% of independents think Trump should halt his 2024 presidential campaign. Among “double haters,” 67% share this view. The influence of independents and those disillusioned with both candidates could be crucial, especially in key battleground states.

The poll additionally found that 72% of Republicans, 6% of Democrats, and 23% of independents maintain a favorable view of Trump post-conviction. Biden’s favorability ratings: 4% among Republicans, 72% among Democrats, and 24% among independents.

Half of Americans believe Trump’s guilty verdict was justified, with 27% disagreeing and 23% uncertain. Additionally, 49% think Trump should end his campaign due to the verdict, including 16% of Republicans and 79% of Democrats.

A separate Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Friday explored the immediate political repercussions of the verdict. It found that over half of registered voters said the verdict does not affect their likelihood of voting for Trump.

However, about 10% of Republican voters indicated they are now less likely to support him. Among independents, 16% said the verdict makes them more likely to vote for Trump, while 26% said it makes them less likely, and 58% said it would not influence their decision.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll, conducted from May 31 to June 1 among a random national sample of 781 U.S. adults, has a margin of sampling error of 3.7 points. The poll’s partisan division is 31% Democrats, 29% Republicans, and 32% independents.
