Fresno State’s season opener at defending national champion Michigan on Aug. 31 will kick off at 4:30 p.m. PT and be broadcast on NBC, the university announced Monday.

The primetime selection is the first time that Fresno State will play a game broadcast by NBC. The 2024 campaign will mark the third straight year with the Bulldogs showcased on a major broadcast network in the regular season, as they played games on FOX in 2022 and 2023.

First Meeting Between Fresno State and Michigan

Fresno State’s Week 1 trip to Ann Arbor is the first meeting between the schools. Fresno State comes off a 9-4 season with 14 returning starters.

Michigan enters the 2024 season as the reigning national champion following a 15-0 season in 2023. The Wolverines defeated the Washington Huskies 34-13 in Houston on Jan. 8 to claim the title.

Since then, Michigan lost coach Jim Harbaugh to the Los Angeles Chargers and had 13 players selected in the NFL Draft. Michigan’s new coach is Sherrone Moore, who served as interim head coach when Harbaugh was suspended last season.

The Bulldogs are set to receive a $1.85 million payout for the game, which was agreed to in 2020. Last season, the Bulldogs received $1.3 million to play at Purdue and $1.1 million at Arizona State, winning both games.

Michigan’s Stadium and Fresno State’s History

Michigan’s stadium, referred to as “The Big House” has an official capacity of 107,601. All seven of the Wolverines’ 2023 home games sold out.

The last time Fresno State faced the defending national champion was its 2005 matchup with USC. The Bulldogs came close to pulling off an upset, but Trojans running back Reggie Bush ended those dreams with 513 all-purpose yards.

The Bulldogs last faced the defending national champion in the season opener in 1927, playing at Stanford on Sept. 17, 1927 and losing 44-7. Stanford was the 1926 co-national champion, along with Alabama.
