KMJ radio picked up big awards recently, and then celebrated at the Fresno City Council.

Christopher Gabriel took home a Golden Mic award, an honor by industry group RTNA Southern California.

“Fresno’s Morning News,” the 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. show on KMJ (105.9 FM/580 AM) — hosted by Gabriel — also took home a Golden Mic for best newscast in its division.

Gabriel’s individual award came for best sportscast, notable since Gabriel was filling in that day for regular sportscaster George Takata.

Christina Musson, host of the 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. “Broeske and Musson Show,” won her second straight Gracie Award for best co-host in her division. The award, from the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation, is named after radio pioneer Gracie Allen.

Last week, the Fresno City Council proclaimed the day in honor of Gabriel and Musson.

An emotional Gabriel recounted advice from his father, who helped open the first Ronald McDonald House.

“He taught me that whatever you do, do things for your community,” Gabriel said.

ABC 30 Wins Latest Ratings Period

ABC 30 says it is still the top TV news station in the Fresno market.

The network owned-and-operated station touted its latest numbers from the February sweeps period. All of its news shows — from “Action News AM Live” in the 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. slot — its 3 p.m. broadcast which launched last September, and newscasts at 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. are the tops in the market by a wide margin.

The 6 p.m. hour broadcast, anchored by Warren Armstrong and Margot Kim, “delivers a +11,500% advantage (over its competitors), making it the highest-rated hour of news in the entire Fresno DMA,” a station news release said.

Greenwald Lands New Baseball Play-by-Play Job

Doug Greenwald

Former Fresno Grizzlies broadcaster Doug Greenwald landed a new job in time for the 2024 baseball season.

Greenwald will provide play-by-play for the Yolo County High Wheelers, in the independent Pioneer League. The season starts May 21. Games will be broadcast online at Flo Sports.

Although the team does not serve as a minor league club for a MLB team, the league is an official MLB Partner league. The team will play its games at the home stadium of the UC Davis baseball team.

The 12-team league, with teams in five different states, used to be a Rookie-ball league for MLB, before reorganization of the minors after the canceled 2020 season. The High Wheelers are a 2024 expansion team, joining the league along with the Oakland Ballers.

Greenwald served as the Grizzlies broadcaster for 20 seasons through 2022. The veteran playcaller worked a season in Winnipeg. The move puts Greenwald closer to his Bay Area home. He is already a familiar voice in Davis, calling the UC Davis women’s basketball team for the past three seasons. He also has San Francisco Giants games on his resume as a fill-in announcer.

Curiosity drives David Taub. The award-winning journalist might be shy, but feels mighty with a recorder in his hand. He doesn't see it his job to "hold public officials accountable," but does see it to provide readers (and voters) the information needed to make intelligent choices. Taub has been honored with several writing awards from the California News Publishers Association. He's just happy to have his stories read. Joining GV Wire in 2016, Taub covers politics, government and elections, mainly in the Fresno/Clovis area. He also writes columns about local eateries (Appetite for Fresno), pro wrestling (Off the Bottom Rope), and media (Media Man). Prior to joining the online news source, Taub worked as a radio producer for KMJ and PowerTalk 96.7 in Fresno. He also worked as an assignment editor for KCOY-TV in Santa Maria, California, and KSEE-TV in Fresno. He has also worked behind the scenes for several sports broadcasts, including the NCAA basketball tournament, and the Super Bowl. When not spending time with his family, Taub loves to officially score Fresno Grizzlies games. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, Taub is a die-hard Giants and 49ers fan.
