Two Fresno County sheriff’s deputies were hospitalized with minor injuries Tuesday after their patrol car crashed into a FAX bus while they attempted to stop a wrong-way driver in downtown Fresno, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The deputies were traveling together in a patrol car when they spotted a vehicle driving north in the wrong direction on M Street near Tuolumne Street at about 5:10 p.m.

The deputies drove north on M Street in an attempt to make a traffic stop, but when their patrol car reached the intersection at Stanislaus Street, it crashed into the side of a FAX bus, disabling the patrol vehicle.

The wrong-way driver continued traveling and was never contacted, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency medical personnel and Fresno police officers responded to the crash. Both deputies were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Seven passengers aboard the bus also went to the hospital as a precaution, though none appeared to have injuries, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Fresno Police Department is handling the investigation into the collision.

The Sheriff’s Office reminded motorists to watch for one-way streets while driving in downtown Fresno, particularly for drivers unfamiliar with the area.
