Fresno Chaffee Zoo has welcomed a female Masai giraffe calf, the latest in a series of recent births at the zoo.

The calf was born Aug. 18 to Siku, a female Masai giraffe, zoo officials said. Siku and her calf will remain behind the scenes while they bond and are monitored by the zoo’s animal care and veterinary teams.

“We’ve had many exciting additions recently at Fresno Chaffee Zoo, and we are thrilled to add the birth of a Masai giraffe calf to that list,” General Curator Nicole Presley said.

Presley said Siku is caring for the calf, which is growing and doing well.

The calf is the second born to Siku and male Masai giraffe Fenny at Fresno Chaffee Zoo. The birth comes after Fenny’s recent death.

“The birth of his daughter has become a bright spot for the Zoo staff and guests that cared for Fenny, and we look forward to introducing her to the community,” Presley said.

The zoo said updates on Siku and her calf will be posted on its social media channels.

Several other young animals are also growing at Fresno Chaffee Zoo. Soleil, a 3-month-old siamang, and Winston, a 2-month-old Malayan tapir, can periodically be seen in their habitats in Kingdoms of Asia.

The zoo’s 9-week-old African lion cubs, Indy and Jubilee, remain behind the scenes with their mother, Zamaya.
