Several railroad crossings in Merced were closed Monday after a pedestrian was struck by a Union Pacific Railroad train, police said.

The incident occurred near 16th and V streets, where the train remained stopped, blocking multiple crossings, according to the Merced Police Department.

Police said the M Street crossing and those south of M Street remain open. The V, R, and O street crossings are closed until further notice.

Authorities said the closures are expected to remain in place for an extended period while emergency responders and railroad personnel work at the scene.

Drivers are advised to use alternate routes, allow extra travel time and use caution in the area.

The Merced Police Department said all streets have been reopened and traffic has resumed.
