The Clovis Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint Friday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at an undisclosed location in the city.
Police said checkpoint locations are selected using data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The department said the primary goal is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
The department reminded drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana can also affect a person’s ability to drive. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
Police said drivers convicted of a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.
The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
