Prosecutors with the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office secured a five-year denial of parole for a man convicted in a 1995 Visalia crime spree involving sexual assaults and armed robberies, officials said.
Senarble Demonze Campbell, 52, who is serving a life sentence at the California Men’s Colony, was denied release during a Thursday video conference hearing, according to the district attorney’s office.
Authorities said Campbell’s crimes began around 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 26, 1995, when he and another man entered a 7-Eleven in Visalia wearing ski masks and used a pellet gun resembling a handgun to rob the store.
Later that evening, Campbell went to the Oak Tree Inn, where he knocked on a door and encountered an 11-year-old boy, according to prosecutors. After briefly engaging with the child, Campbell shoved the weapon through the door when the boy tried to close it before leaving.
That same night, Campbell and his accomplice entered another Visalia convenience store, where prosecutors said Campbell pointed a gun at two female clerks and sexually assaulted them before fleeing with alcohol.
Around 5 a.m. on Dec. 27, 1995, Campbell forced his way into a Visalia apartment occupied by an 8-months-pregnant woman and her sleeping 4-year-old daughter, officials said. Prosecutors said he sexually assaulted the woman multiple times, made phone calls while inside, and bragged about the crimes before leaving with stolen items.
Investigators were able to trace a phone number the victim memorized, leading police to locate and arrest Campbell.
He was convicted in 1997 of forcible rape, sexual assault, multiple robberies, sexual battery, and firearm-related charges and was sentenced to 27 years to life in prison. Prosecutors said he has incurred several sexually related rules violations while incarcerated.
This was Campbell’s second parole hearing. He previously received a 10-year denial in 2016.
