DUI checkpoints do more than take drunk and buzzed drivers off the road.
They also bring law enforcement into contact with people who aren’t licensed to drive. Or are driving on suspended and revoked licenses.
Fresno police arrested five people on suspected DUI between between 9 p.m. Saturday and 3. a.m. Sunday. However, officers also cited 18 drivers for not being legally licensed.
Those totals are from 292 drivers stopped at the checkpoint at Cedar and Bullard avenues. Thus, more than 6% of drivers there during that time weren’t legally on the road.
Fresno PD’s next DUI checkpoint is scheduled for Saturday, July 4. Local authorities say that DUI checkpoint locations are based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes.
Funding for the checkpoints are from a California Office of Traffic Safety grant received from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
