A Los Angeles police officer fatally shot a dog Saturday while responding to a report of a screaming woman, only to discover she had been celebrating the New York Knicks’ NBA championship victory, according to NBC News.

The LAPD said officers responded to a call in Canoga Park and encountered a barking dog when a resident opened her apartment door. Police said the resident was asked to secure the dog, but it exited the apartment and charged at an officer, prompting the shooting.

The dog, a 2-year-old St. Bernard-golden retriever-poodle mix named Jameson, was wearing a Knicks shirt. Owner Marie Marseille said she had been cheering the Knicks’ first NBA title in 53 years and disputed that the dog was aggressive
