The Visalia Police Department issued 33 citations and towed two electric motorcycles during a bicycle and pedestrian safety operation conducted Wednesday, authorities said.

The enforcement effort focused on bicycle and pedestrian safety and resulted in citations for various violations, according to the department.

Police also used the operation to remind riders about California’s electric bicycle laws. Under state law, e-bikes are divided into three classes based on speed and motor assistance.

Riders younger than 18 must wear a helmet when operating a Class 1 or Class 2 e-bike, police said. Helmets are required for all Class 3 riders regardless of age.

Officials said e-bikes are not permitted on sidewalks in many areas. Modified electric motorcycles that exceed e-bike classifications may require registration, licensing and insurance.

The department encouraged riders to obey traffic signals, use lights at night, travel in the direction of traffic, and avoid unsafe speeds in pedestrian areas.

Funding for the operation was provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
