A man accused of shooting and wounding a Fresno police officer during an attempted arrest over the weekend has died Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Paul Rodriguez Cisneros, 56, of Fresno, died after remaining hospitalized and in custody since Sunday, according to Fresno police.

About the Incident

The shooting happened Saturday near Garrett and Clara avenues while officers were attempting to arrest Cisneros in connection with a domestic violence investigation.

Police said officers had responded earlier that evening to a domestic disturbance call and identified Cisneros as a suspect wanted on domestic violence-related charges, including assault with a deadly weapon with a vehicle and criminal threats. Investigators also determined he was armed with a handgun.

At about 9:23 p.m., uniformed officers attempted to contact Cisneros to arrest him when they were “immediately met with gunfire,” police said.

One officer was struck multiple times in the arm and upper body and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment. A second officer was not injured.

Authorities later tracked Cisneros to a residence near Bardell and Vine avenues. A SWAT team responded and heard multiple gunshots from inside the residence as officers approached, police said. Nearby homes were evacuated while members of the Crisis Negotiations Team attempted to negotiate with Cisneros, but he did not respond.

SWAT officers later entered the residence and found Cisneros in the garage suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police said.

Police said the firearm used by Cisneros to shoot himself was recovered at the scene when he was arrested.

The investigation is being treated as an attempted murder case involving two Fresno police officers.
