Spain will not take part in the Board of Peace initiative launched by U.S. President Donald Trump to address global conflicts, citing its commitment to multilateralism and the United Nations system, Reuters reported.
“We appreciate the invitation, but we decline,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told reporters late Thursday after an EU summit in Brussels.
Washington says the board would help broker and monitor ceasefires, organize security arrangements and coordinate rebuilding efforts in postwar regions, stemming from Trump’s Gaza peace plan.
Sanchez said the decision was consistent with Spain’s commitment to international law and noted the initiative does not include the Palestinian Authority.
Israel has joined the board, along with Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Traditional U.S. allies, including most European Union members, were absent from the launch.
