Madison Macay recently joined KMPH FOX26 as the new “10 O’Clock News” anchor. She arrived from KRNV-TV in Reno, where she spent four-plus years.

Both stations are owned by Sinclair.

A San Francisco native, she worked behind the camera at Bay Area station KTVU for a year before landing her first on-air role in Reno in 2020.

Macay said her father is a Fresno State graduate. She graduated from San Francisco State.

She would normally anchor with Monty Torres, but he has been out ill, recovering from cancer.

In the interim, anchors Liz Gonzalez and Kim Stephens switched shifts, with Stephens anchoring the nighttime newscast and Gonzalez heading the “Great Day” program.

Stephens will remain on the nighttime broadcast until Torres comes back. There is no timetable for his return.

KMPH also added Madison Wilber as a reporter. A South Carolina native, she graduated from San Jose State. She had her first taste of TV reporting over the summer at KION-TV in Salinas before the station shut down its local newsroom.

Several KION alumni now report for KMPH, including Karl Cooke and Dania Romero.

Armstrong Announces Exit Plan

Warren Armstrong, Fresno’s top-rated anchor, recently announced his exit plan at ABC30. Armstrong will give up his 11 p.m. shift next month and retire entirely by November 2026.

Armstrong, 66, will continue to anchor the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts.

“I’m not that 26-year-old anymore who moved to Fresno from Ohio more than 40 years ago,” Armstrong said during a Nov. 20 newscast.

Armstrong said he looks forward to spending evenings with his family.

Armstrong joined ABC30 in January 2000, picking up several awards in his 25 years in Fresno. The station has long been the ratings leader.

A Wooster, Ohio, native, Armstrong previously worked in the Steubenville, Ohio/Wheeling, West Virginia, market. He came to Fresno for his first stint at CBS47 from 1985 to 1996. He worked three years in Sacramento before returning to Fresno.

New Morning Anchor at KSEE

Luis Cruz

A veteran broadcaster recently joined KSEE24’s morning news show.

Luis Cruz replaced Brody Logan on KSEE24 “Sunrise” and “Midday” newscasts.

This is a return to KSEE for Cruz, who reported at the station from 2000 to 2002 and at ABC30 from 2002 to 2003.

Cruz started his career at KGO-TV, the San Francisco ABC affiliate, in 1993. He has since worked in Chico, Salinas, Yuma, Arizona, Las Vegas, and San Diego. He also held executive positions at The San Diego Union-Tribune and the Los Angeles Times.

Rookie Joins ABC30

Vincent Camarillo

ABC30 also added Vincent Camarillo as a new reporter last month. A Fresno native and Fresno State graduate, Camarillo spent most of this year interning at the station.

It is an unusual move for ABC30 to hire a rookie with no prior experience.

“The team’s belief in me is only a reflection of the time and effort they graciously put toward my development as a young journalist,” Camarillo posted on LinkedIn.

ABC30 has a help-wanted posting, looking for a weekend news anchor. The pay range is $62,000 to $75,000.

KVPR, Fresno State Announce Deal

Fresno State students will have a pathway to intern at public radio station KVPR-FM (89.3).

The station and the Institute for Media and Public Trust announced a collaboration that will include media and audience research, professional skill development, and improving public media literacy.

“This partnership represents an important step in preparing the next generation of journalists to serve the Central Valley with integrity, curiosity and a commitment to public service,” Jim Boren, the institute’s executive director, said.

Fresno State has long been a pipeline to KVPR, including for president and general manager Joe Moore.
