Millions of Californians may lose health coverage due to a new federal Medicaid work requirement, the first imposed nationwide in the program’s 60-year history, the LA Times reported.
Backed by President Donald Trump and Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, the rule requires adults to prove they are working, in school, or volunteering 80 hours a month.
State officials estimate up to 3.4 million people in California could lose Medi-Cal coverage as a result.
“It’s going to be much harder to stay insured,” said Martha Santana-Chin of L.A. Care Health Plan, which expects up to 1 million members could lose coverage.
The new requirement, part of a GOP-led budget bill, affects about a third of the state’s 15 million Medi-Cal recipients.
Advocates warn many could lose coverage due to bureaucratic hurdles, even if they qualify.
