A section of Caldwell Avenue in Visalia will close for five days beginning Monday, Aug. 4, as part of a major road widening project, city officials said.

The closure will affect the stretch between Ben Maddox Way and Pinkham Street and is scheduled to last through Friday, Aug. 8. A traffic detour will be in place throughout the week, with signage and crews on-site to assist drivers.

Project Details

The work involves removing an existing concrete box culvert that allows water to pass under the road. It will be replaced with temporary piping to accommodate reconstruction of the southerly half of a new culvert, according to Eric Bons, a senior civil engineer with the city of Visalia.

A new concrete culvert is a required improvement of the overall project and is necessary to accommodate the widening of Caldwell Avenue, the city said.

The Caldwell Avenue Widening Project will expand the road from two to four lanes and include a raised center median, curb, gutter, storm drain system, sanitary sewer extension, new street lighting, traffic signal upgrades, and landscaping.

Construction is being handled by Avison Construction and is expected to continue through May 2026.

Detours and Updates

Drivers will be rerouted via Ben Maddox Way, K Avenue, and Pinkham Street during the closure.

Motorists are advised to use caution in the area and follow posted detour signs.
