The Fresno Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday night, aiming to catch impaired drivers and keep roadways safe during the holiday.
The checkpoint will take place from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. at an undisclosed location, police said. The site was selected based on data identifying areas with high rates of impaired driving-related crashes.
Authorities said the primary goal is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
The department also reminded the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol — prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana can all impact a driver’s ability.
First-time DUI offenders can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license, officials warned.
The operation is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
