Fresno Unified School District is spending about $8,000 to reprint diplomas, removing “interim” from Superintendent Misty Her’s title, for graduations this week.
“To ensure that diplomas accurately reflect her new title, we initiated a reprint following the board’s final decision,” said district spokesperson Diana Diaz.
But the change doesn’t come cheap with the district spending $7,446 on the reprints. Each diploma only costs about $2, but that number adds up with more than 3,500 students graduating.
Additionally, the diplomas, supplied by Jostens, were shipped from Minneapolis, Minnesota, resulting in an additional cost of around $600.
The order comes amidst a $49 million budget deficit, which has caused the district to eliminate management positions and cut programs.
The district had previously received the original diplomas, which are typically ordered in March or early April.
Those who graduated from Design Science Middle College High School on May 27 received the previous version of the diplomas. The diploma holds the same value as reprinted ones.
All other students will be given the revised version Diaz said.
Graduation ceremonies began on Monday and will continue throughout the week.
