Twenty drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence during a Fresno Police Department enforcement operation on Saturday, authorities said.

First-time DUI offenders face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, in addition to a suspended license, according to police.

The department said it will conduct another DUI enforcement operation on June 21 and plans to hold additional DUI patrols and checkpoints throughout the year in an effort to keep roadways safe.

Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
