The California Teachers Association is calling on educators, students, and allies to join statewide rallies on Saturday, May 17, to defend public education against what it describes as ongoing attacks from the Trump administration.

The CTA, which represents thousands of educators across California, is mobilizing its members to protest cuts to the Department of Education, threats to student resources, and policies that could affect school safety, the union said on its website.

The rallies, part of the CTA’s “Fight for Schools” campaign, are aimed at urging Congress to protect funding for students and Department of Education programs and to prevent ICE raids in school spaces.

“We won’t stand by while the attacks from the Trump administration threaten resources for our students,” the CTA says on their website. “Our union has the power to demand that Congress protect funding for students and the Department of Education programs we all rely on, and to keep our school spaces safe from ICE Raids.”

The CTA’s campaign includes actions such as delegations to the offices of nine GOP Congressional members in California, where union members met with representatives from April 11 to April 27 to advocate for the protection of education funding and student safety.

The rallies on May 17 are set to take place in cities including Sacramento, San Francisco, Hanford, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
