Amazon has announced plans to close two facilities in California, potentially affecting hundreds of jobs. As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, the e-commerce giant will shutter its fulfillment centers in Sacramento and Irvine.
According to WARN notices filed with state and local authorities, the Sacramento facility closure on Oct. 30 will impact approximately 159 employees, while the Irvine site closure on Nov. 7 will affect an additional 162 workers.
Amazon spokesperson Sam Stephenson stated, “We’re always evaluating our network to make sure it fits our business needs and to improve the experience for our employees, customers, and partners.” He added, “We appreciate our team’s hard work and commitment, and we’re supporting impacted employees to find new opportunities within Amazon, including at nearby fulfillment sites.”
The company has pledged to offer transfer opportunities to affected employees before considering permanent layoffs. This move follows recent closures in San Francisco, including a fulfillment center in the Dogpatch neighborhood and a 75,000-square-foot facility nearby.

Amazon Plans for Facilities at Other Locations
Despite these closures, Amazon has expansion plans elsewhere. The company acquired a six-acre site in San Francisco for $200 million in 2020, with plans to develop a 650,000-square-foot logistics center. Additionally, Amazon purchased a warehouse in San Bruno for $96 million, intending to redevelop it into a parcel delivery station.
These recent developments highlight Amazon’s ongoing efforts to optimize its operations and adapt to changing business needs in the competitive e-commerce landscape.
