Questions are multiplying about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s presidential campaign strategy as he badly trails former President Donald Trump in polling of Republicans nearly a month after his campaign launch, The Hill reported Friday.
Reported the political website: “In a sign of just how concerned some of the governor’s allies are, the spokesperson for the pro-DeSantis PAC Never Back Down recently referred to Trump as the ‘runaway front-runner’ in the primary and said that DeSantis faced an ‘uphill battle.’ ”
Polling shows that after his launch in late May, DeSantis has struggled to gain traction in national and early state-level polling.
The Real Clear Politics average of polls shows Trump with 52.4% support, while DeSantis trails at 21.5%. An Echelon Insights poll released Wednesday indicated that fellow Republican contender Vivek Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur, was gaining on DeSantis.
In a statement to The Hill, DeSantis campaign press secretary Bryan Griffin described the primary as a “marathon, not a sprint.”
