Doug Greenwald, the longtime voice of the Fresno Grizzlies, will not be back for the 2023 season.

“I’m a free agent,” Greenwald said.

The Grizzlies informed Greenwald on Monday they were making a change, based on their budget.

Greenwald has broadcast Grizzlies games since 2003. In more than 2,500 games, Greenwald has called the 2015 Triple-A championship, five teams that were the top farm club for the World Series champion, and dozens of future baseball superstars.

His goal is to remain doing baseball play-by-play, especially at the Major League level. He does have experience, calling a handful of games for the San Francisco Giants as a fill-in broadcaster over the years. He also spent 12 years calling Giants spring training games.

“The goal is to find a radio play-by-play position for any of the 30 Major League teams,” Greenwald said. He’s reached out to his baseball contacts.

The team praised Greenwald.

“Our entire organization is extremely grateful for Doug’s stewardship of our radio presence over the past two decades and we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. Doug has been an integral part of many historical moments with our club and will always have a cherished spot in Fresno Grizzlies history,” team spokesman Jonathan Bravo told GV Wire.

Paul Loeffler, voice of the Fresno State Bulldogs, had high remarks.

“We’ve been blessed to enjoy Doug Greenwald’s skilled work in the Valley for all these years. He delivers a Major League caliber description of the game, as evidenced by the MLB opportunities he has earned. Doug lives, eats, and breathes baseball, brings his uniqueness to every broadcast, and will be a credit to the next organization that taps his talent. As a friend, he is as true and loyal as they come. I’m excited for the next fan base that will get to listen to our friend Doug,” Loeffler said.

Greenwald, 48, has had his share of broadcasting great Grizzlies teams and great players.

“My memories are obviously just all of the great players who’ve come through there. Definitely the friendships, no doubt about it, on and off the field. But I mean, you look at the Giants’ three World Series titles. I mean, the part of the foundation was Fresno,” Greenwald said.

Some of those players include Brandon Crawford, Buster Posey, Tim Lincecum, and Madison Bumgarner.

“It’s a lot of the friends I met along the way as well, that you meet in and out of the ballpark,” Greenwald said.

For the past two seasons, the Grizzlies have played in the Single-A California League, part of the restructuring of Minor League Baseball. In both seasons, the Grizzlies qualified for playoffs with Greenwald behind the mic.

Greenwald lives in San Francisco in the offseason. He currently broadcasts UC Davis women’s basketball.

The son of the late broadcaster Hank Greenwald — best known for his work with the Giants and Warriors — Greenwald had prior baseball play-by-play stops with Modesto, Burlington (Iowa), and Shreveport.

For most of Greenwald’s seasons, the Grizzlies were on a terrestrial radio outlet. In recent seasons, most games have been online only.

The team has not formally announced who will be behind the mic for 2023. Stephen Rice, the team’s communication director, has filled in for Greenwald in the past.

Last month, reporter Corin Hoggard left ABC 30 to move to the Twin Cities, to be closer to family. Now Hoggard will resume his journalism career.

He announced on social media he will now report for Fox 9, owned and operated by the Fox network.
