Dianne Feinstein’s colleagues are worried that she lacks the mental fitness to continue representing California in the U.S. Senate, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

A California Democrat in Congress described to the Chronicle a recent interaction with the 88-year-old Feinstein in which the lawmaker had to reintroduce themselves several times during a lengthy policy conversation.

The congressional representative spoke to the newspaper on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the topic.

“I have worked with her for a long time and long enough to know what she was like just a few years ago: always in command, always in charge, on top of the details, basically couldn’t resist a conversation where she was driving some bill or some idea. All of that is gone,” the lawmaker said.

Other lawmakers and former Feinstein staffers told the Chronicle that the Democratic senator’s memory is quickly deteriorating. Her term ends in 2024.

Feinstein’s husband, businessman Richard Blum, died in February at the age of 86 after a long bout with cancer.
