Patch Farms is a truly special place for those who are developmentally delayed.
The motto of the Fresno non-profit says it all: “Planting and Teaching Caring Hearts.”
The farm is unique in that it offers its “special farmers” a supportive, challenging and interactive agricultural experience. They learn about irrigation, planting and harvesting. During the past year, they produced crops like sweet corn, sunflowers, peppers and tomatoes from the fertile ground on Dakota Avenue, west of Highway 99.
Patch Farms and its programming sends a message that special needs individuals “don’t have to be isolated,” Purdy says.
“I learn from our special farmers … than they do from me. To see their reaction when they have planted something is worth its weight in gold.”
Chicken Coop & Mobile Fruit Stand in the Works
Future plans include constructing a chicken coop, building a mobile fruit stand and restoring a barn.
It’s all done through the caring hearts of community supporters and partners.
See how Patch Farms got its start in our video above.
