A suspected DUI crash that could have ended in tragedy instead left behind only property damage — and a driver reportedly asleep on a patrol car, the California Highway Patrol’s Fresno division said in a Thursday statement.

Authorities say an intoxicated driver plowed through a brick wall and across a backyard, stopping inches short of a children’s play structure.

The driver, who was not injured, was so impaired that he allegedly lay down and fell asleep on the hood of a patrol vehicle rather than attempt a field sobriety test.

Officials described the incident as “100% preventable.”

The driver now faces court proceedings, attorney fees, and significant financial costs, along with damages to the vehicle and private property.

A first-time DUI conviction can result in approximately $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license, police said.
