The House Ethics Committee has initiated an investigative subcommittee to probe potential campaign finance and House rule violations by Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.), according to a committee release.

The subpanel will examine whether Cherfilus-McCormick breached campaign finance laws during her 2022 special election and re-election campaigns, failed to disclose necessary information on House-required statements, or accepted voluntary services for official work from a non-employee of her congressional office.

The committee, which typically does not disclose allegation details until investigations are complete, did not provide further information. Cherfilus-McCormick’s office also refrained from commenting on the allegations, but a spokesperson stated that the congresswoman is taking the matters seriously and working towards resolution.

The investigation follows a referral from the Office of Congressional Ethics in September. Cherfilus-McCormick joined the House in 2022, succeeding the late Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) after a special election.
