The Biden Admin Getting Ready for the End of the COVID Public Health Emergency

The White House is preparing to end the COVID public health emergency, even as cases rise, the administration’s coronavirus response coordinator said Tuesday.

During the transition, the federal government will cease buying COVID vaccines, treatment and diagnostics as the virus becomes integrated into the normal healthcare market, like influenza is. When exactly that happens “is driven by a few factors, not the least of which is lack of congressional funding,” the official said.

Among the administration’s highest priorities is making sure services and treatment remain accessible to the uninsured and the at-risk population. “We want to make sure that people don’t all of a sudden wake up one morning and say, ‘Oh, I no longer have access to treatment.'”
