A record 89% of U.S. adults say government corruption is widespread, the highest level in Gallup’s 20-year trend and up 10 percentage points from 2025, according to a Gallup poll released Sept. 2.
Concern spans party lines. Gallup found 91% of Democrats, 90% of independents, and 83% of Republicans view corruption as widespread. Democratic concern has risen sharply from 57% in 2024 and 76% in 2025, while Republican views have remained comparatively stable.
The United States already ranked highest among the 38 OECD countries surveyed in 2025, when 79% of Americans reported widespread government corruption compared with a 59% median across the group.
Gallup also found 71% of Americans believe corruption is widespread in business, up eight points from last year. The 18-point gap between perceptions of government and business corruption is the largest Gallup has recorded in the United States over its two-decade trend on this measure.
