The Clovis Police Department will be looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence on Friday.
“Impaired driving is preventable,” Traffic Sgt. Abby Padgett said. “It’s a choice. If you’ve been drinking or taken drugs that impair, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you places.”
The department reminded the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with driving. Officials also noted that while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
Drivers convicted of a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.
Police offered several safety tips for the Fourth of July holiday, including designating a sober driver in advance, using rideshare services or public transportation, and hosting responsibly by providing non-alcoholic drinks and ensuring guests have safe transportation home.
Officials also urged people to look out for others who may attempt to drive impaired and to call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers.
Funding for the enforcement effort is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
