The Fresno Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Saturday from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. at an undisclosed location, officials said.

The department said checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. Officials said the primary purpose of the operation is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.

Police reminded the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with driving ability. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.

Officials noted that drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.

Funding for the checkpoint program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, police said.
