San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey missed most of the 2024 season due to Achilles and knee injuries, limiting him to just 202 yards on 4.0 yards per attempt in four games.
While McCaffrey was healthy throughout training camp and was a healthy scratch from the team’s three preseason games, bad news struck on Thursday when he was limited in practice and added to the team’s injury report due to a calf issue. Then, on Friday, the running back didn’t participate in practice, and head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that he’s questionable to play on Sunday in their season opener against the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field.
However, McCaffrey spoke to reporters in the locker room after practice and Shanhan’s media availability and provided his own injury update that came with a much different tone.
“Nothing serious, I can tell you that,” McCaffrey said. “Like I said, I feel great about where I’m at. Unfortunately, when you have an injury history that I have, sometimes, when you don’t practice, things get blown out of proportion, but like I said, I feel great.”
McCaffrey also said he’s planning to play on Sunday against Seattle, according to The Athletic’s Vic Tafur. However, it’s important to note that the 29-year-old was saying similar things prior to San Francisco’s Week 1 matchup last year, and he went on to miss 13 games.
With rookie running back Jordan James doubtful for the opener while recovering from a broken finger, the 49ers could benefit from McCaffrey leading a group that also includes Brian Robinson Jr. and Isaac Guerendo.
