If June came in like a lamb — an 85-degree lamb, that is — it’s going out like a blast furnace, thanks to the return of triple-digit temperatures to Fresno and the Valley.

After almost an entire month of what some are describing as “$200-a-day resort weather,” this week’s temperatures will climb up to the normal mid- to high 90s — and then keep climbing, soaring to 105 on Friday and 107 on Saturday and Sunday.

The hotter-than-normal temperatures are linked to the heat dome that has baked Texas in recent days and is spreading out, National Weather Service meteorologist Emily Wilson said Monday.

The heat coming to the Valley will bake and further dry out plants, increasing the opportunity for wildfires created by errant fireworks.

“Please don’t,” Wilson said, adding that fireworks usage is somewhat safer over pavement or water, but not much else.

Maybe Hotter Long-Range. Maybe Not

The longer-range forecast is predicting the likelihood of hotter than normal temperatures continuing through July 9, but the following week has an equal chance of either above or below normal temperatures, Wilson said.

If the high temperatures continue, the National Weather Service will put out a heat advisory, advising residents, especially those who are sensitive to heat, to remain indoors in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible, and to wear loose-fitting clothing, sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses when outdoors, she said.

And, make sure to stay hydrated, Wilson said.

With the heat wave bearing down, the early-week temperatures will seem altogether mild. Monday’s forecast high for Fresno is 89 degrees, followed by a high of 90 on Tuesday.
