The Fresno Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint Saturday from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. at an undisclosed location, the Fresno Police Department announced in a statement.

Police said that they arrested 14 in their last DUI enforcement operation.
Checkpoint locations are chosen based on data showing high rates of impaired driving-related crashes, police said.
The goal is to increase public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.

The department emphasized that impairment is not limited to alcohol.
Prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as marijuana — whether used medicinally or recreationally — can also impair driving and are illegal to use behind the wheel, police said.
Drivers convicted of a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license, according to police.

Funding for the checkpoint is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
