The Fresno Police Department will conduct a special enforcement operation on Monday, April 7, targeting drivers suspected of violating the hands-free cell phone law.

Under the law, drivers are prohibited from holding a phone or any electronic communication device while operating a vehicle, the Fresno Police Department said in a statement.

This includes making calls, texting, or using apps. Violators face fines, and repeat offenses within 36 months can result in a point added to their driving record, police said.

To avoid distractions, the Fresno Police Department advises drivers to pull over to a safe location if they need to make a call or set directions.

Drivers are also encouraged to silence their phones or store them in an unreachable spot before driving.

The enforcement operation is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, with support from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
