The Fresno Police Department arrested 12 drivers on suspicion of DUI during an enforcement operation on Saturday, the department said in a statement.

Drivers convicted of a first-time DUI offense face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license, police said.

Authorities plan to conduct another DUI enforcement operation on April 12, as well as additional patrols and checkpoints throughout the year to improve roadway safety.

The enforcement efforts are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
