The three-vehicle collision took place on northbound Highway 41 south of Ashlan Avenue at 1:30 a.m., authorities said.

Merced Man Booked for Felony DUI

A passenger in a Honda Accord driven by Jacob Perry, 28, of Merced suffered major injuries, the CHP said in a social media post. Perry was arrested for felony DUI and taken to the hospital for medical clearance before being booked into Fresno County Jail.

“Unfortunately, incidents like this demonstrate the horrific outcomes that can occur when individuals make the reckless decision to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” CHP Commander Ian Holguin said in a statement.

Before the collision, the patrol car — which had activated its overhead lights — was in the midst of a traffic stop on Chevrolet Equinox in the far-right lane. The car piloted by Perry then crashed into the CHP unit sending the Equinox to the right shoulder. The patrol car and the Accord careened across three lanes and collided with the concrete divider.

The officers, as well as the driver of the Equinox, also went to the hospital for treatment.
