The man behind one of the Central Valley’s most recognizable voices died Saturday.

Al Smith, the former general manager of KMJ and longtime president of the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, was 86, according to KMJ Now.

Born in New Orleans, Smith rose to prominence in the Fresno area through a 15-year career with the radio station, serving as general manager.

“I loved Al,” said current KMJ manager Patty Hixson. “I began working with him in ’87 and have spent my career in radio cherishing every minute I have had with him. He was a great friend and mentor. So many great memories. … This is crushing news for all of us. Especially his beautiful family who he loved and cherished so deeply.”

Smith Is Synonymous With ‘Legends & Legacies’

After leaving KMJ, Smith spent the next 10 years as president and CEO of the Fresno Chamber of Commerce. But even in that time, he could be heard retelling San Joaquin Valley history in the station’s “Legends & Legacies” feature.

Smith voiced the stories, which were researched and written by Catherine Rehart. In 1996, a selection of those stories were published in a volume that would be the first of six such books by Rehart before she died in 2013.

“He wasn’t born here, but he loved Fresno, and he was a tireless champion of our city and our region,” Fresno Chamber of Commerce President Scott Miller said about Smith on social media. “He was literally the voice of Fresno for many years. There will never be another like him. What a legend. What a legacy. Rest in peace, Al.”

Smith’s counsel was sought by many politicians, especially on the conservative side of the aisle. At one time, he considered running for mayor of Fresno but decided against it.
