Four California cities have secured spots in the top 20 of Orkin’s annual “Top 50 Rattiest Cities List” for 2024. Los Angeles maintained its second-place position, while San Francisco, San Diego, and Sacramento also made the cut.

Chicago retained its title as the rattiest city for the 10th consecutive year, with Los Angeles and New York rounding out the top three. Orkin’s John Kane warns, “Rodents can cause a lot of structural problems for property owners. They can get in around piping and even chew through walls.”

California Cities Face Ongoing Rodent Challenges

The list, based on new residential rodent treatments from September 2023 to August 2024, highlights the ongoing challenges cities face in managing rodent populations. Los Angeles’ second-place ranking underscores the city’s persistent struggle with rats, while San Francisco’s fourth-place position indicates a significant rodent presence in the Bay Area.

San Diego and Sacramento, ranking 18th and 20th respectively, demonstrate that rodent issues are not confined to California’s largest metropolitan areas. These rankings serve as a reminder for residents and city officials to remain vigilant in their pest control efforts.

Orkin advises homeowners to watch for signs of infestation, including droppings, gnaw marks, and unusual noises. The company recommends sealing entry points, eliminating food sources, and maintaining outdoor areas to prevent rodent problems.

As fall approaches, rodents seek warm shelter and food, making it crucial for property owners to take preventive measures. Orkin emphasizes the importance of professional pest control in managing and preventing rodent infestations.
