The wreckage of storage units destroyed by a Hezbollah rocket is pictured during a guided tour by the Israeli military for international journalists in Kfar Giladi, Israel, a kibbutz near the border with Lebanon, on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024. With Israel hurtling toward a full-blown war with Hezbollah in Lebanon, the United States is working to broker a short-term cease-fire betwen the two, hoping to avert a wider war and revive stalled negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, a U.S. official said Wednesday. A senior Hezbollah official survived an Israeli assassination attempt in Beirut on Thursday, according to three security sources reported by Reuters.

The attempt came as Israeli airstrikes in the area killed 22 people, raising concerns from the U.N. about the growing danger to peacekeepers in southern Lebanon.

Wafiq Safa, head of Hezbollah’s liaison unit with Lebanese security agencies, was reportedly targeted by Israel but survived, the sources said.

Earlier, a Lebanese security source told Reuters that Israeli airstrikes targeted a senior Hezbollah official in central Beirut.

The strikes hit a residential neighborhood, marking the first time Israel targeted this area, distinct from Hezbollah’s stronghold in southern Beirut.

By midnight, the Lebanese Health Ministry reported 22 dead and 117 wounded, including a family of eight.

Witnesses described fires and heavy smoke as rescue teams searched for survivors amid the destruction, with footage broadcast by Hezbollah’s al-Manar television.
