Fresno County Supervisor Chairperson Nathan Magsig’s State of the County speech did not include anything about collaborating with the city of Fresno, and possibly for good reason.

Magsig thanked county staff and departments, and recognized “epic hero” award winners. But, the introduction speech from colleague Steve Brandau raised the ire of the city councilman he is running against — as well as Fresno’s mayor.

“Now, in this silly season, we’ve taken a number of hits. It’s been insinuated that we’re corrupt. We’ve been called this week dishonest. And so, you know, I would like to say that for those folks that make those kind of accusations, they need to remember the adage, if you live in a glass house, you shouldn’t throw stones. Right? And then also, if you like the biblical version of that, don’t try to remove the splinter, the speck in your brother’s eye if you have a log in your own eye,” Brandau said.

Brandau is running for re-election against Fresno City Councilmember Garry Bredefeld. The election has been contentious between the former friends. Bredefeld has accused Brandau and his supervisor colleagues of corruption and incompetence.

The election is Nov. 5, but mail balloting begins on Oct. 7, as does in-person voting at the Elections Office, 2221 Kern St. in downtown Fresno.

After Brandau’s words on the stage, Bredefeld shook his head.

Dyer: Damper to this Event

Brandau’s statements did not sit well with Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer — a Bredefeld supporter.

“(The comments were) inappropriate. It put a damper to this event,” Dyer said after the festivities.

On X, Bredefeld shared his opinion.

“Brandau, member of Good Old Boy Club, aka Board of Supervisors, desperately attacks me, Mayor Dyer, and City Council during State of County luncheon. This is what a failed politician and campaign look like. Transparency and accountability are coming to the County November 5th!” Bredefeld said on X.

Brandau responded to GV Wire after the story published, saying he is not interested in expanding upon his comments.

In a campaign radio ad that started airing this week, Dyer said Bredefeld would “fight for transparency and accountability within Fresno County.”

“Simply put, Fresno County needs leaders who are honest and will effectively address the concerns and needs of the people they represent,” Dyer said.

Approximately 1,000 people attended the luncheon at the Fresno Convention Center, hosted by the Fresno Chamber of Commerce.
