Clovis Elementary School hosted its second annual Patriot’s Day flag ceremony today, uniting students, families, and local heroes in a heartfelt tribute to honor the memory of September 11, 2001.

Led by principal Donelle Kellom, the ceremony was filled with meaningful moments, aiming to create a real sense of connection and reflection among the attendees.
“We partner with family members from our school that represent a branch of the military or are a first responder,” Kellom said. “They’re able to sign up to be a part of distributing flags to our classrooms.”
Families and First Responders Lead the Flag Presentation
The event featured grandparents, fathers, and even a great-grandfather handing out flags, symbolizing unity and the importance of community involvement.
“We just want to put an emphasis on September 11th and create a really tangible community experience for our students and families,” Kellom emphasized.

Blackhawk Helicopter Landing Thrills Students
A highlight was the landing of a Blackhawk helicopter, organized by a parent who is a pilot with the National Guard.
“It was very special, and now the kids get to see a live example of the type of equipment our military uses and learn more about what they do,” said Kellom.
The ceremony continued with Student Council President Erin Becker leading the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moving performance of the National Anthem by the school’s sixth-grade choir. The performances set a respectful tone, reminding everyone of the unity and resilience that Patriot’s Day represents.
Student Council members gave an educational presentation on the symbolism of the American flag, explaining its stripes, stars, and colors.
“The battles for freedom were long and tiresome, but the original settlers were sure they were making the right decision. Americans fought then and continue to fight today for freedom and justice for all,” the students explained.
Honoring Local Heroes: Veterans and First Responders Recognized
Veterans, active-duty military members, and first responders took center stage as honored guests, presenting new American flags to each classroom.
“We are humbled to have them with us,” Kellom said, expressing gratitude for their service and dedication.
