About 112,000 Fresno County ballots remained to be processed Wednesday morning following Tuesday’s statewide general election, meaning results in several closely watched local races could continue to shift.

The Fresno County Clerk/Registrar of Voters James Kus estimated at 2 a.m. Wednesday that 108,000 vote-by-mail ballots received Tuesday from vote centers and drop boxes had yet to be processed, according to their website.

Another approximately 4,000 conditional voter registration and provisional ballots were also awaiting processing, bringing the estimated total to 112,000.

Kus told GV Wire he expects that number will increase with U.S. Postal Service deliveries over the coming days.

Nearly 50% of Fresno County Voted

If the county’s estimate of 112,000 remaining ballots holds, roughly 258,800 voters cast ballots in the election, representing about 48.9% of Fresno County’s 528,940 registered voters.

That figure does not include additional vote-by-mail ballots that could still arrive via USPS. Ballots postmarked by Election Day, Nov. 3, can be accepted through Nov. 10, according to the county.

In the 2022 midterm election, voter turnout in Fresno County reached 44.29%. Fresno County voter turnout in the 2024 presidential election reached 64.72%.

The outstanding ballots could be significant in races separated by relatively narrow margins in the election night returns.

The elections office also reported approximately 3,000 ballots as of Election Day requiring voters to correct, or “cure,” problems with their signatures before those ballots can be counted. Signature cure letters received by 5 p.m. Nov. 25 could result in additional ballots added to the count.

Because the number of ballots arriving by mail is unknown, the eventual number of outstanding ballots could exceed the county’s current estimate.

The next update to Fresno County vote totals is scheduled for Thursday before 5 p.m.

The county began its official canvass following Election Day, a process that includes reviewing and processing ballots before the results are certified.

Fresno County has until Dec. 3 to complete its official canvass and certify the election results under California law.
