The Clovis Police Department will hold a driving under the influence checkpoint Friday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at an undisclosed location in the city, officials said.

Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing where impaired driving-related crashes have occurred. The department said the primary purpose of checkpoints is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.

Police reminded drivers that impairment can be caused by substances other than alcohol. Some prescription and over-the-counter medications can interfere with driving, and driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal despite medicinal and recreational marijuana being legal in California.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, according to police.

The checkpoint is funded through a California Office of Traffic Safety grant provided through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
