A pro-Israel website presented as an independent think tank is part of an Israeli government-funded effort to influence how artificial intelligence chatbots answer questions about Israel, The Guardian reported.
The Hanover Institute for Public Policy published 124 reports totaling more than 560,000 words between Aug. 6 and Aug. 14, according to The Guardian. The organization apparently has no legal entity, physical address, named staff or report bylines.
Piro Inc., a New York media production company, registered the website with the U.S. Justice Department under the Foreign Agents Registration Act as material distributed for the Israeli government.
The Guardian reported the site was built using a commercial platform designed to help content get cited by ChatGPT and other AI systems. The broader campaign has involved tens of millions of dollars routed through third parties, with contracts referencing efforts to influence AI responses.
Israel’s foreign ministry has denied conducting U.S. “influence operations.”
