Fresno County supervisors will consider on Tuesday adding new rules to control media access as attendance for board matters increases.

The rules, if approved by supervisors, would allow the county administrative officer to designate media areas and make sure media coverage and recording “remains non-disruptive” — namely, that it does not obstruct walkways or public views, said County Administrative Officer Sonja Dosti.

“Recording activities must be non-disruptive, and are restricted to the public seating areas,” the proposed rule states. “Recording activities must not obstruct aisles, entrances, or exits.”

It also allows the county to restrict media access to recognized outlets.

The proposed revisions to county policy come as board meetings have drawn increased scrutiny and attendance, Dosti said.

At the same time, the county continues its search process for a new administrative building, which would include a new board chamber.

Several board actions this year have packed the chambers. The board decision to keep the Fresno County Public Library from participating in Pride Month filled out the room with audience members waiting out in the hall.

More recently, the decision to order a study for Better Roads Safe Streets similarly filled out the room. The board is now actively looking at new spaces to accommodate larger chambers, Dosti told GV Wire.

The board will likely have updates for the public about the new building at the Aug. 25 board meeting, Dosti said.
