A 57-year-old Sanger man was arrested Thursday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run collision that killed a 71-year-old pedestrian earlier that morning, police said.
Officers responded at about 5:26 a.m. to Academy Avenue near Fifth Street after receiving a report of an unresponsive person lying in the roadway. They found Bernard Anhelm, 71, of Sanger, suffering from injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
Despite lifesaving efforts by officers and emergency medical personnel, Anhelm was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Sanger Police Department.
Police launched a fatal hit-and-run investigation with assistance from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit.
Investigators said they used the city’s Public Safety Video Surveillance System and the recently implemented Flock Safety automated license plate reader and camera system to identify the suspect vehicle.
Investigators located the vehicle and arrested Alvino Castro, 57, of Sanger in the 400 block of O Street in Sanger.
Castro was booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run resulting in death.
