A man was shot and killed by a Madera County sheriff’s deputy Friday after authorities said he took control of the deputy’s TASER, fired it at her and allegedly attempted to gain control of her firearm during a struggle.
The incident began at about 4:39 p.m. when dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a residential burglary in progress near Avenue 12 and Road 35, according to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office.
About one minute later, a second caller reported a man carrying a crowbar and charging at passing vehicles. Authorities said it was not initially known that the two incidents were related.
A deputy responding to the area contacted the suspect and became involved in a struggle. During the confrontation, authorities said the suspect gained control of the deputy’s department-issued TASER and fired it, striking the deputy with the probes.
As the fight continued, multiple people called 911 to report that the deputy and suspect were struggling on the ground. Several community members intervened to assist the deputy, and callers reported the suspect was attempting to gain control of the deputy’s firearm.
Despite efforts by the deputy and assisting citizens, authorities said the suspect continued to resist. At about 4:56 p.m., the deputy fired her service weapon, striking the suspect.
Deputies, CalFire, and EMS personnel immediately provided life-saving measures, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deputy sustained minor injuries and was treated by EMS.
The investigation remains active and is being conducted under established protocols for deputy-involved shootings.
The sheriff’s office said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
