Four drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence during a DUI checkpoint conducted by Fresno police, authorities said.
The checkpoint was held Saturday at First Street and Tulare Avenue from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., according to the Fresno Police Department.
Police said officers contacted 276 vehicles during the operation. In addition to the DUI arrests, 32 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle without a valid license or while their license was suspended or revoked.
Fresno police said checkpoint locations are selected based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The department said the primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
The department said its next DUI enforcement operation will be a checkpoint scheduled for June 13.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
