An 18-year-old Fresno man was arrested after leading police on a roughly 20-minute pursuit on a pit bike through city streets, authorities said.
The incident began Sunday at about 8 p.m. when officers with the Fresno Police Department responded to the area of Fulton and Merced streets for reports of pit-style motorcycles, also known as “pit bikes,” being ridden recklessly and performing wheelies.
An officer spotted a male rider without a helmet on Fulton Street and attempted a traffic stop for multiple vehicle code violations. The rider instead fled, initiating a pursuit in which he ran multiple red lights and stop signs, drove the wrong way on streets, and nearly caused several collisions, police said.
The pursuit continued for about 20 minutes across the city, with assistance from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department Eagle 1 helicopter, which tracked the suspect and relayed his location to officers.
The rider eventually stopped near Olive and Thesta avenues, parked the pit bike at a residence, and ran inside. About an hour later, he exited the home and was taken into custody, police said.
He was identified as Angel Ramirez of Fresno. He was arrested on suspicion of felony evading and multiple vehicle code violations and booked into the Fresno County Jail. The pit bike was impounded as evidence.
